TAYA Tells the Story of How Her Song "Getaway" was Birthed
TAYA, one of the worship leaders of Hillsong UNITED, dropped the third single, "Getaway" from her forthcoming debut full-length album (out May 27) last Friday. Written by TAYA, Jon Guerra and Lindsey Sweat, the song is a call to surrender and rest in Jesus.
TAYA reveals how the song came about after a dry spell. "At the end of an intense 3 week writing trip, my friends Jon Guerra & Lindsey Sweat sat tossing around some ideas. Nothing was really sticking so Lindsey asked if I had any voice memo's I'd be willing to work off. We had written together a few times the past 18 months and I felt safe, so I put one forward.
"And from there it kind of just all came out and after we finished, one of us sat back and sighed, 'I really needed that.' We ended up using the demo vocal because it felt the most honest, like it captured the cathartic sigh we had after writing it and every time since that I've played it."
TAYA also reveals that Matthew 11 provides the seed for the song. "Early on in Matthew 11, Jesus unleashed on the cities where he had worked the hardest but whose people had responded the least. Then, out of nowhere, he stopped abruptly & He prayed. Jesus then resumed talking to the people, but now tenderly.
"In an invitation, Jesus then asked the people; "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me-watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly. With many lines straight out of Eugene Petersons translation of Matthew 11:28-30, it's no wonder this song snuck up on us, a song we didn't know we needed."
TAYA concludes, "God's timing has continued to shock and bless me in a world where things seem to be falling apart, extremely messy and at times quite painful."
The world first heard TAYA on UNITED's RIAA Certified Multi-Platinum global worship anthem "Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)" which was boasted #1 at Radio and spent a record-setting 61 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Top Christian Songs Chart. Since then, her voice has become an unmistakable clarion call to worship across the world. During her tenure with UNITED, as well as Hillsong Worship, TAYA has helped steward over 1 Billion global career streams as well as performed live for over 10M people in 12 different countries across six continents.
