Keith and Kristyn Getty Launches International Hymn Writing Collective to Inspire New Songwriters
Getty Music, founded by celebrated hymn writers Keith and Kristyn Getty, will launch the second round of its International Hymn Writing Collective on March 17. The program aims to develop the skills of writers who seek to compose congregational songs full of deep theology, profound poetry, and stirring melodies.
The first round of the collective, in the fall of 2020, had over 200 participants from countries including the USA, UK, Canada, Indonesia, South Africa, and Australia. Combining a series of webinars on the song writing craft with personalized coaching calls and song feedback, the vision behind the Hymn Writing Collective is to inspire and equip the next generation of hymn writers around the world.
Having been at the forefront of the modern hymns movement since writing the modern classic "In Christ Alone" twenty years ago, Keith and Kristyn Getty are looking forward to gathering a community of hymn writers from around the world to offer training and encouragement. Keith Getty OBE said, "Our hope is to help songwriters who are passionate about building up their local churches through song to hone their creative gifts. We believe that great hymns share deep theology and are vital for the health of the church. Writing these songs to serve your local church is an important ministry."
Participants in last year's collective shared that they found the experience transformative for their song writing. Karen Zellers Sevier of Houston, Texas, said, "The personalized attention, input, and insight helped to bring greater clarity and understanding, and I felt better equipped to accomplish the goal of writing my first hymn." Christina Degazio of Huntsville, Canada likewise stated, "The entire event exceeded my expectations both spiritually and musically." One songwriter, Dan Loch of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, remarked, "I've been writing songs for 12 years, earned a BA in Music and a Master of Divinity, yet the encouragement given by both the Getty Hymn writing team and the community they've brought together has inspired unprecedented growth in my song writing."
The focus of the spring 2021 semester will be learning from the great hymns of the past in order to serve the Church with high quality hymns in the future and over the course of the spring semester (March to May), registrants will have the opportunity to submit songs for feedback and participate in coaching calls for mentorship. Each session will be led by experienced writers including Keith Getty (In Christ Alone), Kristyn Getty (The Lord is My Salvation), Andrew Peterson (Is He Worthy), Matt Papa & Matt Boswell (His Mercy is More), Matt Merker (He Will Hold Me Fast), and Jordan Kauflin (All I Have is Christ).
Getty continued, "We want to discover a whole new catalogue of excellent hymns that we can help craft, publish and record in the future; we hope that Hymn Writing Collective will lead us to discover great songs that are worth sharing across the globe."
Registration is now open for the spring 2021 semester although spaces are limited in order to give personalized attention to each registrant-those who are interested are encouraged to sign up soon to reserve their place at https://www.gettymusic.com/hymnwriting
