BeBe Winans Scores First Solo No. 1 on Gospel Airplay Chart
As a duo with his sister, BeBe and CeCe Winans have not been foreign to the #1 slot on Billboard's Gospel Airplay chart. But as a soloist, this is the first time BeBe scores his first #1. BeBe's "He Promised Me," featuring Tobbi & Tommi and introducing Kiandra, ascends 2-1 on the April 28-dated list.
"He Promised Me," co-written by Winans, is the first taste of his upcoming solo studio album.
Winans previously led Gospel Airplay as half of brother-and-sister duo BeBe & CeCe Winans, as "Close to You" hit No. 1 on the chart dated Sept. 26, 2009, for its first of 10 weeks on top.
As a duo, BeBe & CeCe Winans have posted three Gospel Airplay entries; following "Close," "Grace" reached No. 5 and "I Found Love (Cindy's Song)" rose to No. 11, both in 2010.
Usually working as a duet act with his sister CeCe or working the background on releases by the Winans (four of his older brothers), BeBe Winans released his first solo album in October 1997. It did very well on the gospel charts, and even made an impact on the secular charts. He followed it with 2000's Love & Freedom.
The concert album Live and Up Close appeared in 2002, and then the holiday collection My Christmas Prayer in 2003, the first release for Winans' own Movement Group imprint, an offshoot of Still Waters (itself an offshoot of Hidden Beach Recordings). Dream arrived in 2005, again on Winans' own imprint. The live Church appeared in 2007 from Koch Records, with America America following five years later in 2012 from Razor & Tie.
