Motorola Unveils the Symbol TC70: the World's First "Mobile Computer"
The American tech company recently unveiled a device that provides the comfort of a smartphone, but works like a personal computer. The Solutions division of Motorola showed off its newest device, the Symbol TC70, and Tech Week Europe reported from the event.
The Motorola Symbol TC70, powered by Android Kitkat 4.4.2, is a mobile computing device that is especially useful for large-scale businesses, like retail chains, warehouses, and distribution centers. Motorola promoted the the TC70 as the first-ever "mobile computer," and informed prospective buyers that the device can save businesses money in the long run through its durability and multi-functionality.
The sturdy device, with a 4.7-inch Gorilla Glass 2 display, is both dust- and water-resistant, and with IP67 protection, the device can even be used with wet fingers or gloves, as well as with the conventional stylus. The TC70 is also robust enough to still work after it has been dropped onto a concrete surface from a significant height. The device's protective features are particularly useful for warehouse environments, where dust and dirt are constant issues; and, with a screen that easily adapts to any lighting condition, it is usable at any time of the day or night, inside or outside.
Motorola's new device is also business-centered, and Channel Partners Online reported that the TC70 will be equipped with more than 50 enterprise applications. These certified features include "price and inventory check, line busting, assisted selling, and workforce and inventory management." The mobile computing device can also provide secure data capture for the integration of barcode scanning, payment-processing, and the capture of signatures and images. As the Motorola Symbol TC70 is powered by an 8MP camera, users will be able to easily capture high-quality images.
To complete the well-rounded workplace capacity of the TC70, Motorola Solutions' new gadget is VoIP ready, so it can be used as a two-way radio once it is connected to a WiFi signal—this allows for easier communication within any work environment. The TC70 also has NFC-support, a dual-core processor clocked at 1.7 GHz with 1GB RAM, and wireless software features.
The additional accessories that are included with the TC70 mean that users will not only be more effective, but they will also be more comfortable, as holsters, a magnetic stripe reader, and trigger handles provide a convenient user experience.
Computer World reports that the Symbol TC70 will be available for US$2,000 per unit. But, if companies intend to buy the device in bulk quantities, Motorola's Product Marketing Senior Director, Barry Issberner, said that the TC70 will cost less than US$1,000 each. Issberner also said that TC70 customers will be entitled to a five-year repair and services warranty, as Motorola Solutions will produce the device over the same period of time.
