Band-Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas?
On December 10th, two very important events occurred - one in music history and one in the history of the church.

In 1984, the single "Do They Know It's Christmas" was released by Band-Aid. The charity super-group group was brought together by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to aid in famine relief in Ethiopia.

Band-Aid consisted of:

  • Bananarama's Keren, Sara and Siobhan
  • Big Country's Bruce Watson, Mark Brzezicki, Stuart Adamson and Tony Butler
  • Boy George
  • Culture Club's Jon Moss
  • David Bowie
  • Duran Duran's Andy Taylor, John Taylor, Nick Rhodes, Roger Taylor and Simon Le Bon
  • Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Holly
  • George Michael
  • Heaven 17's Glenn Gregory and Martyn Ware
  • Kool & The Gang's Dennis Thomas, James "J.T." Taylor and Robert 'Kool' Bell
  • Marilyn
  • Paul McCartney
  • Paul Young
  • Peter Blake
  • Phil Collins
  • Shalamar's Jody Watley
  • Spandau Ballet's Gary Kemp, John Keeble, Martin Kemp, Steve Norman and Tony Hadley
  • Status Quo's Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt
  • Sting
  • The Boomtown Rats' Bob Geldof, Johnny Fingers, Pete Briquette and Simon Crowe
  • The Style Council's Paul Weller
  • U2's Adam Clayton and Bono
  • Ultravox's Chris Cross and Midge Ure

The song is one of the few Christmas songs that has not been covered by a Christian artist.

In 1520, German reformer Martin Luther publicly burned Pope Leo X's bull, "Exsurge Domine," which had demanded that Luther recant his "protestant" heresies, including that of justification by faith alone.
