Derrick Rose: "I Have No Fears...I Think Everything Will Go My Way"
"The proving ground for Rose has arrived. If he doesn't return to superstar form this year, it should be safe to say that he never will," writes John Holmes at Bleacher Report. Since 2012, the 25-year-old Derrick Rose had to undergo two consecutive season-ending knee surgeries, first for a torn ACL in his left knee, then for a torn meniscus on his right knee. This upcoming season, he says he is confident of his health. In fact, as early as August, during a Team USA practice game, he told the Chicago Tribune: "I have no fears, I have faith. I know that I'm going to be fine. I know that I busted my ass the entire two summers - you can say two seasons - to get back to where I am right now. Just try to keep it moving, stay positive every day, do everything consistent like I've been doing. I think everything will go my way."
This season, the youngest player to have won the NBA's Most Valuable Player distinction will also have a much stronger supporting cast on the hard court floor, what with the recent acquisition by the Chicago Bulls of Pau Gasol from the Los Angeles Lakers, Doug McDermott from the Denver Nuggets and Nikola Mirotic from Spain's national team. Rose in an interview with Sun Times observed: "They [referring to the Bulls' front office] gave it their all, we got who we could get, who wanted to come, and that's who we have to ride with. I think this [Bulls team will be] the most talented team I've played on in my NBA career, to tell you the truth. We all have one goal."
With training camp set to begin Tuesday, Chicago Bulls fans are only too glad to have their former MVP back in action. Born and raised in the city, Rose has always made it a point to give back to the community. An outspoken Christian who wears an "In Jesus Name I Play" wristband during his games, Rose on Monday donated $1 million to After School Matters, a Chicago-based non-profit that organizes after-school programs for teens. In his press statement, Rose said: "To have a strong community of people who believe in your potential can make all the difference in the world. So many people have invested in me and I want to do the same for Chicago's teens."
