Fall TV series: New shows are a mix of Hits and Misses; Here's your guide on what to expect
Gone are the days of stellar TV series such as Lost, Desperate Housewives, Friends, House, and Breaking Bad, among others. While not seemingly promising, this fall's line-up of shows has something for every TV viewer.
Here in a nutshell are what to look out for this season:
Sundays
Madam Secretary (8PM, CBS): Tea Leoni stars as a US secretary of state on this political drama that's more Commander In Chief and less The West Wing.
Mulaney (9:30PM, Fox): Former Saturday Night Live writer John Mulaney stars in a Seinfeld-inspired sitcom that's reportedly barely half as funny as the original.
Mondays
Gotham (8PM, Fox): A young detective name Jim Gordon is out to clean the streets of Gotham City is this dark and brooding Batman prequel.
Jane the Virgin (9PM, The CW): Based on a Venezuelan comedy, Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) and her boyfriend (Brett Dier) get the shock of their lives as Jane is accidentally artificially inseminated by a sample from her married boss and cancer survivor Rafael (Justin Baldoni).
Scorpion (9PM, CBS): Tech wizards from fields such as psychology, mechanics and statistics help federal agents solve tough cases.
State of Affairs (10PM, NBC): Katherine Heigl plays a CIA adviser to the US president (Alfre Woodard) in this political drama. Heigl's character is still coping from her boyfriend's death in Afghanistan, which, apparently, is not all that it seems.
Tuesdays
The Flash (8PM, The CW): The Arrow spinoff stars Barry Allen (Grant Gustin), a forensics assistant who gains super speed after getting struck by lightning.
Selfie (8PM, ABC): A modern take on My Fair Lady, Eliza (Karen Gillan) tries to revamp her image on social media with the help of marketing whiz Henry (John Cho).
Manhattan Love Story (8:30PM, ABC): A rom-com starring New York hipster Peter (Jake McDorman) and city newbie Dana (Analeigh Tipton).
Marry Me (9PM, NBC): Writers David Caspe and Casey Wilson team up to create the story of Annie and Jake, whose engagement gets shaky as Annie unintentionally insults friends and family in a get-together.
NCIS: New Orleans (9PM, CBS): Scott Bakula stars in this NCIS spinoff.
Forever (10PM, ABC): Ioan Gruffudd is Dr. Henry Morgan, a 200-year-old New York City coroner who dies and resurrects again and again. He is then implicated in a subway driver's murder during a freak accident.
Wednesdays
The Mysteries of Laura (8PM, NBC): Debra Messing stars as Laura, a New York homicide detective in a show reminiscent of Fr. Dowling's Mysteries.
Red Band Society (9PM, Fox): This light drama chronicles life in a hospital pediatric ward. Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer and Dave Annable join the young cast.
Black-ish (9PM, ABC): Anthony Anderson stars as Andre, an ad agency executive who tries to keep his family's African-American identity in a predominantly white neighborhood.
Stalker (10PM, CBS): Dylan McDermott and Maggie Q play investigators in this crime drama that looks at obsession in the eye.
Thursdays
Gracepoint (9PM, Fox): Anna Gunn plays as a small town cop investigating a child's murder after she gets bypassed for a promotion in favor of a newcomer (David Tennant).
The McCarthys (9:30PM, CBS): A sitcom about a close-knit Boston family starring Tyler Ritter, Jack McGee, and Laurie Metcalf.
Bad Judge (9PM, NBC): Kate Walsh is Rebecca Wright, a tough, sexually liberated woman whose edgy life is kept in line by her job as a court judge.
A to Z (9:30PM, NBC): A cute comedy about inter-office romance.
How to Get Away with Murder (10PM, ABC): Viola Davis stars as law professor Annalise Keating, whose students soon find out that her lectures would have to be applied in real life.
Fridays
Cristela (8:30PM, ABC): Latina funny girl Cristela Alonzo stars in this family sitcom about a law student trying to make a name for herself.
Constantine (10PM, NBC): Matt Ryan plays John Constantine, a demon hunter battling supernatural elements while struggling with his own inner demons as well.
