NFL Running Back LaMichael James Granted Release from San Francisco 49ers
Running back LaMichael James has not been having a great pre-season with the San Francisco 49ers and his agent, Jeff Sperbeck, declared that he had asked for a release from the team. James got his wish and his agent tweeted that he was granted his release.
James was on the active roster for the 49ers on Sunday in the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys, but he had lost his return job to Bruce Ellington, and only got two rushes in the game.
The 49ers used a second round pick in James back in 2012. When Kendall Hunter injured his achilles and Brandon Jacobs didn't work out, James got his chance to show the team how he could make an impact.
James was showing signs that he could be a key player for the 49ers but in 2013 had an MCL sprain in training camp. The injury had him fall in the depth chart and was never really able to gain his spot back.
The 49ers have moved on with running backs Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde as their primary running backs and James was just not needed anymore.
James played college football for the University of Oregon. The 2010 NCAA college football season was a breakout one for James, as he rushed for 1,682 yards during the regular season, the highest in the nation. He finished third in balloting for the Heisman Trophy and received the Doak Walker Award. In 2011 he became Oregon's career rushing leader and rushed for a school-record 1,805 yards that season. He is considered to be one of the top running backs throughout his college career, with his 5,082 total rushing yards placing him 2nd in Pacific-12 Conference history and 14th in NCAA history. The 49ers selected James in the second round with the 61st pick in the 2012 Draft.
We will have to wait and see which team takes a chance on James and picks him up for the remainder of the 2014 NFL season.
