American Gods TV Show Release Date, Latest News: Possibly Ready for TV Showing by Late 2015; But, Script Still to be Penned, Cast and Director Still to be Announced
The TV adaptation of American Gods, Neil Gaiman's Hugo and Nebula Award-winning fantasy novel which came out in 2001, has finally been given the green light for development and production. Starz and FremantleMedia has picked up the project from HBO. The pilot episdode will be written by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green who will also be serving as showrunners for the series. Novel author Gaiman will be an executive co-producer. There is still no word on who will direct nor on who will be on the cast. However, according to Airlock Alpha, should the pilot get picked up, the American Gods TV series could premiere in late 2015.
American Gods follows the story of ex-con Shadow whose wife and best friend just died in a car accident. Following his release from prison, he gets a job as bodyguard to the mysterious Wednesday, a conman who turns up to be an incarnation of the Old God Odin. Wednesday gets Shadow to help in his cross-country quest to rally the other Old Gods (Mr. Nancy/Anansi, Mr. Ibis/Thoth, Mr. Jaquel/Anubis, among others) to fight the New Gods (The Technical Boy, Media, Men in Black, and The Intangibles) for mankind's belief. Several events led Shadow to the realization that both sides really had nothing to gain and everything to lose. With that, he tells the gods that America is a "bad place for Gods" and recommends they go home.
On creating a TV version of the cult favorite and critically acclaimed book, Fuller in a statement said: "Neil Gaiman has created the holiest of holy toy boxes with American Gods and filled it with all manner of magical thing, born of new gods and old. Michael Green and I are thrilled to crack this toy box wide open and unleash the fantastical titans of heaven and earth and Neil's vividly prolific imagination."
