Sidewalk Prophets Video Devotional Series Reflecting On Songs From New Album, 'Live Like That'

Dave Frey, lead singer of Sidewalk Prophets, leads new video devotionals that reflect on the band's newest album, 'Live Like That,' in combination with Biblical lessons. On June 10, he released adevotional based on the new song 'Wrecking Ball.'

In his newest devotional, Frey begins by saying, "I don't want to sugar coat things and I know that sometimes life can be hard. Just yesterday I received, on Facebook, a letter from a fan and it simply said, 'life is hard, please help however you can,' and I didn't know what to say. I read that and my heart broke for her and I just, I had no words, so I just tried to find some words in the Bible, tried to find some encouragement to give to her to let her know she was loved."

He went on to explain that he, himself, had experienced that same feeling. "I remember times in my life when I felt those exact thoughts, 'life is hard, help, help somebody,' and it felt like I was all by myself. You know, I was a child of divorce, my parents divorced when I was young. I was engaged and it all fell apart at one point. And man, those times at my lowest of lows I was crying out for help. And there'd come those days when I was fighting battles with lust or pride with greed and I felt like it was all myself that I was battling, that nobody else had the same downfalls that I did," he said.

God says that we are not alone, however, and Frey discovered that, although it hurts to be set free from the sin of this life, it is absolutely worth it. "When we wrote our song 'Wrecking Ball,' it wasn't an easy one to write. We knew that sometimes when we ask God to come and break our hearts so that they might be made stronger, it's not a pleasurable thing at the time. But it is, when all is said and done, it's a beautiful thing, to realize that when we feel our weakest, that's when God is at his strongest. In our weakness, He is strong," he said.

He quoted 2 Corinthians 12: 7-10 to back up his assessment. The scripture reads, "To keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassingly great revelations, there was given to me a thorn in my side and a messenger of satin to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But He said to me, 'My Grace is sufficient for you. My power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions and in difficulties, for when I am weak, He is made strong."

The Sidewalk Prophets song 'Wrecking Ball,' follows this theme perfectly. It is a plea to God, asking Him to wreck the sinful nature of a person of this world and re-create them to be the best of who they can be.

"All that being said, I really hope today that you're honest. Honesty is at the root of this Book [the Bible], it's at the root of our hearts and our growth in life. If you can't be honest about your walk and able what you struggle with, then you're going to become a prisoner to it and today I pray that you find a friend, someone close and any hardship or pain that's on your heart I pray you share it," Frey said. "Remember that today, take that with you and know that you're loved and that you serve a God that is much stronger than anything you could ever imagine."

Sidewalk Prophets have released five devotionals previous to this one. They also released videos reflecting upon the sentiments behind, 'Live Like That,' 'Love, Love, Love,' 'It's Good (Love's Not Safe),' 'Help Me Find It,' and 'Hearts On Fire.'  They each highlight key verses that were the inspiration behind each of the songs on the album. The new album, 'Live Like That,' was released in 2012.
