'Fifty Shades of Grey' Latest and Juiciest News, Oscar-Worthy Performance: Jamie Dornan as 'Christian Grey,' says Screenwriter
Kelly Marcel, the British writer who wrote the screenplay for the film adaptation of the best-selling E.L. James erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey, was at the "An Evening in the Writer's Room" series hosted by Reza Aslan last week. There she was asked about the difficulty of adapting to film a line from the book, specifically the "Mmmm...he's soft and hard at once, like steel encased in velvet, surprisingly tasty, salty and smooth. He's my own Christian Grey-flavored popsicle" line which the host recited to her according to ET. She explained that writing the scenes had to be very specific and descriptive in the script. She was however all praises at how the actors did manage to act out the scenes as written. Said she, "It's genius. They apparently did that scene great. Apparently Jamie is great at being soft and hard at the same time. Which is hard to do for an actor! He's going to get an Oscar!"
In an episode of The Today Show, Jamie Dorian and co-star Dakota Johnson were in fact already asked about what it was like doing the steamy sex scenes during the filming. Johnson replied, "It's not a romantic situation. It's more technical and choreographed." Dorian added, "That's a big part of it...having trust. Because, you know, we got ourselves into situations that don't feel that sort of natural, and they're not that easy and you need to have the trust there."
"Fifty Shades of Grey," the movie, wrapped up production early this year. It was directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson based on a screenplay written by Marcel with Patrick Marber and Mark Bomback. There will be two versions of the movie - one, a "Rated-R," for the mainstream audience, and another, an "NC-17," for the die-hard fans of the explicit erotic novel.
In previous talks with reporters, producer Dana Brunetti said, "What we're kind of hearing from the fans is they want it dirty...they want it as close as possible (to the book)...I always thought it would be really cool if we released the 'R' version, and then we had an 'NC-17' version that we released a few weeks later. Everybody could go and enjoy the 'R' version, and then if they really wanted to see it again and get a little bit more gritty with it then we have that 'NC-17' version out there as well. That is my idea, but the fans and the studio will benefit from the double dip. We do not want this film to be seen as mommy porn - we want to keep it elevated, but also give the fans what they want."
The "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie still has to hit the theater screens by February 13, 2015, in time for Valentine's Day. Yet, according to sources cited by Entertainmentwise, "Universal are so convinced of box office success that they're already forging ahead with the sequel."
