Pepperdine Worship Summit Draws 5,000 Features Chris Tomlin
Five thousand attendees filled Alumni Park on Saturday evening for the sold-out Pepperdine Worship Summit, an annual praise and worship event. Attendees included members of the Pepperdine community and residents from across Southern California.
"Pepperdine's Worship Summit brought people from all over California together to worship the name above every name," said Tim Spivey, Vice President for Spiritual Life. "Seeing 5,000 students and fellow believers gathered, raising their hands and voices in God's honor was a sight and sound I will never forget."
Over 1,500 students and 3,000 guests registered for the event.
This year's event featured GRAMMY® award-winning singer-songwriter Chris Tomlin, author and speaker Sadie Robertson Huff, music ministry United Voice Worship, and Waves Worship, a musical collective of Pepperdine students, staff, and alumni.
In his introduction of Tomlin, Pepperdine University President Jim Gash said, "We invited Chris to come because we wanted you to raise your voices together in worship, to show you who we are and what matters at Pepperdine."
Waves Worship kicked off the event with covers from Maverick City Music and UPPERROOM including "I Thank God" and "Rest On Us" along with "Glorious Day" by Passion. The group also introduced original songs "Let It Fall," set to be released on October 15, and "In Jesus Name."
United Voice Worship then took the Worship Summit stage for the third year in a row, performing covers such as "Praise" by Elevation Worship, "God So Loved" by We The Kingdom, "The Lord's Prayer (It's Yours)" by Matt Maher, and "Raise a Hallelujah" by Bethel Music.
Chris Tomlin opened his first set with "Good Good Father" and continued with "Great Are You Lord," "Yahweh," "Our God," and "Everlasting God."
Witnessing the spiritual fervor of the community, Chris Tomlin said, "If it's ok, we'd like to be adopted tonight as the official worship band of the Waves."
After Tomlin's set, Sadie Robertson Huff spoke about preparing for eternity, mentioning that an earthquake is "a wake up call and a reminder that this world is not our home." Huff encouraged the crowd to turn to Jesus and live out His mission of evangelism. "There is a King coming back, and there's nothing casual about that," she said.
Following Huff's message, Tomlin led the gathering in a second energetic set to close out the evening.
Throughout the evening, attendees enjoyed food from The Habit Burger Grill, The Tropic Truck, Glazed & Confused, Joe's Pizza, Dina's Dumpling, Flamin Hot Chicken, Afters Ice Cream, and Birrieria El Patron. Other vendors included Sabbath Candle Company, Malibu Made, Faith Center Co, and Lynx Athletics Club alongside a Pepperdine Bookstore pop-up.
