The pirates are back on the high seas, setting sail for 2017. That's right, "Pirates of the Caribbean 5" is due for release in the summer of 2017. It is not certain yet whether the film will keep its original subtitle, "Dead Men Tell No Tales."
Originally, audiences were supposed to see "Pirates" hit theaters in July 2015, but Disney did not reckon on the loss they would suffer from last year's box office flop "The Lone Ranger," starring Johnny Depp. "Pirates" was therefore shelved due to budgetary concerns and time constraints. The next tentative release date was for the summer of 2016.
However, this was not to be either. After the original release date for "Pirates" was pushed back, star Johnny Depp took on several new projects, including "Black Mass" which he is currently working on, and "Alice in Wonderland 2," which he will begin immediately after filming wraps on "Black Mass."
It can only work in Disney's favor to space out their two powerhouse franchise releases. With "Alice 2" coming out in the summer of 2016 and sure to draw a large crowd to the box office, it makes more sense to save the next "Pirates" film for a prime spot in the summer of 2017. According to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, shooting for "Pirates 5" will begin early next year.We can expect to see it open in theaters following a week after "Despicable Me 3" and a week before the "Fantastic Four" sequel.
"Pirates of the Caribbean" comes to theaters on July 7, 2017.
