Top 10 Worship Songs of 2021
2021 is almost over. Now is the time to pause to look at some of best worship music that have had been released this year. In compiling this list, we specifically look for songs that the church can sing together as a collective. This means that only songs with a strong melodic structure conducive to congregational singing are chosen. Further, for songs to qualify, they need to have a biblical and theological message addressing topics that are mandated through scripture. So, here goes:
10. Dante Bowe "Love is in the Air"
Simple yet captivating. "Love is in the Air" may not have the strongest theological content, but the earnestness to want to dwell in God's presence is palatable and contagious.
9. Darlene Zschech and HopeUC "Mercy on Display"
Released around Easter this year, this hymn finds Zschech giving exposition to the doctrine of atonement. But Zschech doesn't leave it there, she shows us how the cross changes our story. This song is the perfect marriage between solid theology and personalized application.
8. Hillsong Worship featuring Brooke Ligertwood "Re-surrender"
In this song, veteran worship leader Brooke Ligertwood demonstrates why she is one of the most sought-after songwriters in the genre. Interweaving scripture allusions from both the words of Paul and Jesus, "Re-surrender" is a richly textured biblical piece with a powerful melody.
7. Gas Street Music featuring Leeland "Yours"
UK-based worship team teams up with Leeland to craft "Yours." Too often in these COVID times, our emotions and outlook are swayed by our circumstances. "Yours" reminds us that true joy comes when we know that we are God's.
6. Michael W. Smith "Sing Again"
The final and the bonus track to Smith's Worship Forever album, "Sing Again" is a gorgeously crafted piano cum orchestrated piece. With a melody that is pristine, "Sing Again: testifies that even through the greatest sufferings, there is reason for the believer to "sing again."
5. Steffany Gretzinger "Come Let Us Worship and Bow Down"
As a tribute to her recently departed father, Gretzinger re-records some of the popular worship choruses from the 80s and 90s. She gives this Marantha! Music favorite a slow, thoughtful, and gratitude-inducing rendition. When she sings about how "we are sheep of your pasture" you can sense her thankfulness.
4. Elevation Worship and Maverick City Music "Mercy"
Realizing God's mercy, makes us more gracious to ourselves and to others. When a song like this becomes the anthem of our congregation's life, you can see the transformation in time.
Missions is not just a glorified holiday for a week somewhere in Mexico. Rather, missions start with washing filthy feet, loving one another, sacrificing our wealth for the sake of the Gospel, choosing to praise in the valley, and so forth. In a culture that is so centered on ourselves, this is a much-needed song for the church to sing.
Every word on this gorgeous ballad is precious. Narrated through the vantage of God, "Belovedness" is the song for the broken. "You've owned your fear and all your self-loathing/You've owned the voices inside of your head/You've owned the shame and reproach of your failure/It's time to own your belovedness."
1. Phil Wickham "Hymn of Heaven"
Heaven isn't just a fairy tale castle in the sky. But heaven changes the way we see life from now to eternity. Heaven is a doctrine that is not only missing in today's pulpit, but it is also missing in our worship songs. Filled with well-thought lyrics, this song is a must-sing; without a firm grasp of heaven, our lives will be impoverished by fears, worries, and hopelessness.
