Stryper Scores Their First Ever #1 Billboard Top Christian Album
Even though Christian rock band Stryper have been in existence since the 70s, this is the first time they scored a #1 album on the Billboard Christian Albums chart. Even the Devil Believes blasts in with 10,000 equivalent album units earned in its first week, ending Sept. 10, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.
"After 36 years of recording and releasing music, we're so humbled to have our first album top the chart," founding member and lead vocalist Michael Sweet tells Billboard. "We've worked very hard over the years, but I don't know if we've ever worked harder than we did for Even the Devil Believes. We've seen good times and bad times. We've persevered through it all, and to finally have a No. 1 makes it all worthwhile. We're so grateful and thankful for everyone who has helped to make this possible. Here's to 36 more."
Previously, Stryper's best chart performance on the Christian Albums chart has been at #2. They reached the #2 four times with 2009's Murder by Pride, 2013 No More Hell to Pay, 2015's Fallen, and 2018's God Damn Evil.
With over 10 Million albums sold worldwide, Stryper is renowned for its distinctive brand of "heavenly metal" and extraordinary crossover success. The group ascended to prominence in the 1980s with Billboard Top 40 hits like "Calling on You," "Honestly," and "Always There for You," and has maintained a global fanbase ever since. Stryper is the first band to ever have two songs in MTV's Top 10 simultaneously with their hits "Free" and "Honestly."
Stryper is comprised of original members Michael Sweet (lead vocals, guitar), Robert Sweet (drums), and Oz Fox (guitar), plus the addition of seasoned bassist Perry Richardson.
"Even the Devil Believes" was produced by Michael Sweet.
