"If I Stay" Starring Chloe Grace Moretz Slated to Follow "The Fault in Our Stars" as One of the Best Movies of 2014
2014 has truly been the year for YA novels and the world of cinematography. John Green's wildly popular novel-turned film The Fault in Our Stars premiered in theaters on June 6, and his equally-popular novel Looking For Alaska was recently picked to be adapted to the screen by Canadian director Sarah Polley. If I Stay, based on the novel of the same name by Gayle Forman, will no doubt follow in its fellow YA films' footsteps.
Much like The Fault in Our Stars, If I Stay tells a story that is as far from "teenybopper" as it is possible to get. The story focuses on seventeen-year-old Mia (played by Carrie star Chloe Grace Moretz), a Juilliard-bound cellist who is involved in a nearly-fatal car accident that leaves her an orphan in a medically-induced coma. Mia soon realizes that it is up to her whether she emerges from her coma, or to slip away permanently. This story, as does many of its YA counterparts, focuses on much darker issues than conventional teen-aimed stories do. Mia grapples with the concept of death, the afterlife, and personal responsibility as she tries to make her decision whether to stay or go.
What will undoubtedly be hardest to translate from page to screen will be Mia's blunt yet lyrical voice, that speaks of both heartbreaking sorrow and immense joy with a freshness that can come only from a teenager. The trailer promises good things for the authenticity of the novel being translated into film, and you can view it here.
The novel, which was first published in 2009, has been steadily climbing the bestseller lists since the release of the first trailer in April. The book is currently number four on the Amazon bestseller list, as well as on the list of Barnes & Noble bestsellers.
If I Stay will debut in theaters on August 22.
