'The Fault in Our Stars' Breaks Box Office Records and Delights Both Young and Older Audiences
Based on the bestselling young adult novel by John Green, The Fault in Our Stars has been one of the bestselling movies of the summer so far. It was the number one movie in the country during its release weekend of June 6, rounding out with about $48,000,000. As far as young adult movies go, this is definitely a must-see.
The movie tells the story of Hazel Grace Lancaster, a teen battling cancer, who meets and falls in love with charismatic cancer survivor Augustus Waters. Their love story is not exactly material for a Nicholas Sparks novel; Hazel is a blunt, introverted, bookworm of a girl who does not pretend that her cancer is something that makes her a better person or serves as a blessing in disguise.
The movie, as does the book, acknowledges some facts about life that few novels, young adult or otherwise, address: that life very often sucks, and bad things happen without warning and seemingly without purpose to people who are happy, and it doesn't always feel like something good comes out of the bad that we face. Hazel and Augustus share a love that is strikingly true, honest, and rich in a way that most teen fiction does not typically convey. The two teenagers know firsthand that life is short and beautiful things only come along once in a while. Their story is true to life in that what we fear most is exactly what happens, and while we are saddened by the tragedy that Hazel and Gus face, the film does not end on a note of sadness, but instead on one of hope. We know by the end of the film that even if they were given the chance to do it over again, knowing the outcome of their story, Hazel and Gus would still choose to love each other, defying death by creating a love that will outlive it. This film will stick in the minds of all who view it, and no dry eye will be left in the theater after it is over.
