Life.Church Worship Shares the Stories Behind the Songs of their New EP

Life.Church Worship has just released their brand-new EP. The Death of Death EP was written by worship pastors from Life.Church as celebration the promises of God.

Life.Church Worship is a ministry of Life.Church, a multi-site church meeting at 33 physical locations in 10 states and globally at Church Online. An extension of the church's mission to lead people to become fully devoted followers of Christ, Life.Church Worship is passionate about creating music that encourages listeners to pursue a relationship with Jesus.

Congratulations on the release of your new album. Tell us a little about Life.Church and some of the highlights across its more than 20 years.

Life.Church is a multi-site church based in Oklahoma that began meeting in a two-car garage in 1996. Since then, Life.Church has grown to 33 locations in 10 states. Our church is known for using technology to spread the Gospel, from Church Online and our YouVersion Bible App, which has been downloaded more than 370 million times worldwide.

"Death of Death" follows Switch's "Symphony."  How are the two records similar as well as different in terms of the sound and foci? 

The Life.Church Worship songs reflect the modern sound you'd hear on the weekend at any one of our locations, while our Switch songs were written with our students in mind and have a sound that's influenced by Top 40 music. 

Our church's mission is to lead people to become fully devoted followers of Christ, and as an extension of that, our goal for both Switch and Life.Church Worship is to create music that inspires listeners to pursue a relationship with Jesus. Every song we write is an authentic expression of how God is moving in our lives and the lives of the people in our church. Whether we're celebrating or acknowledging the brokenness in our lives, all of our lyrics offer a message of hope.

Who makes up Life.Church Worship?  

Life.Church Worship is a ministry of Life.Church, and many of the worship pastors from our 33 locations contribute to the songwriting process. As pastors, we have the opportunity to walk through different seasons of life with so many people, and we really consider it a privilege to write music that encourages people in their faith. It's an honor and so humbling. 

Let's talk about the songs on the record.  What's the story behind the title cut "Death of Death"?

The Apostle Paul explains that the price for our sin should be death, but that Jesus paid our debt with His death on the cross. When He rose from the grave three days later, He conquered death. But we know Jesus didn't just defeat death and the grave. He also defeated all things that cause death in our lives. Fear, anxiety, trials, struggles-they're all temporary because of Jesus' sacrifice. We really just hope that this song reminds people that with Him, we can walk in victory every day of our lives.

What's the story behind "God So Good"?

The inspiration for this song came from 1 Chronicles 16:34 that says, "Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever." This song gives praise to God for the victory we have over sin and death. One of the lines we love most says, "I'm not a slave to sin, so I'm singing you are good!" These lyrics stir up praise within us, and we just pray that when people sing these songs, they'll be moved by God's goodness too.

Tell us a little more about the song "Where the Spirit of the Lord Is"?

One of the lines in the song says, "there is power in this room." The first time we played it for our staff, we could tangibly feel God's presence and power fill the room. It was incredible! And it's that way every time we play it at one of our locations. We thought the song was good, but we had no idea it would move our church the way it has. It's absolutely heightened our awareness of how God is moving in us and in the communities where we're located.

What about "All Glory"?

This song was inspired by John 1:14, "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." It's a song of celebration about who Jesus is and everything He's done for us. There's a line in the chorus that says, "We lift our endless praise to the highest name, Jesus." And that's truly the intent of this song-to never become complacent or stagnant or apathetic, but to continually give thanks to Jesus for what He's done. 

What's your hope for this record?  How do you wish these songs would impact the church and beyond?

We hope that when people listen to these songs, they're reminded of the goodness and power of God. When we choose to follow Him, when we're in His presence, we don't have to live in fear or stay bound by our sin and shame. Because of Jesus, our hope is eternal and we can live in freedom. We really hope people will cling to those truths and make them their anthem.
