A Royal Ride: Mike Freeman Talks About His New Album
Taking us on a royal ride to the King of kings is Mike Freeman's brand new album "All the King's Horses." In the tradition of the Hinsons and Rusty Goodman, Freeman's style of music is a blessing to all Southern Gospel music and country Gospel fans. Freeman's unique vocal style, coupled with his special ability to communicate the message of the Gospel, is what gives this new album its shine. We are honored to be able to catch up with him for this exclusive Hallels' interview:
Hallels: Thanks Mike for your time. For our readers who may not be familiar with your music, who is Mike Freeman?
Mike: I was born and raised in north Louisiana, spending most of my youth in the town of Bastrop. We attended church there and as far back as I can remember, music was always a part of my life, both at church and at home. As soon as I was old enough to stand up on a piano stool, my parents had me singing in church. I love to sing. Over the years I have been influenced by so many groups and singers in the southern gospel and bluegrass field and I still listen to them all of the time. I never dreamed in a million years that the Lord would allow me to record a CD project of my own and I am so grateful for that. He has blessed me beyond words. My wife, Phyllis, and I live in West Monroe, LA. We have four daughters and six grandchildren.
Hallels: Can you briefly describe for us your style of music?
Mike: I would describe my style of singing as a combination of southern and country gospel.
Hallels: How did the Lord lead you to the release of your brand new record "All the King's Horses"?
Mike: My brother, Wayne Freeman, was in a gospel trio back in the early 90s. He had written most of their music and he has always impressed me with his song writing ability. We were in his studio one day and he started pulling hand-written sheets of paper out of a file - they were songs that he had written years ago. Some he had released and some he had not released. I knew right then the Lord wanted to me do this project. Everything just fell into place. What better way to pay tribute not only to Lord, but to Wayne, who has been a tremendous influence on me all of my life.
Hallels: What would you like your listeners to get out of listening to "All the King's Horses"?
Mike: Listen closely to the words because each song tells a story. They are songs of hope and victory. They are songs that testify to the wonderful fact that because of what Jesus did on Calvary, who I am now is not who I used to be. I believe that many people will identify with every one of these songs.
Hallels: You even wrote a song on the album, does song writing come easy for you?
Mike: I did write A Well That Will Never Run Dry. I wrote that song driving down the highway on my way to work. One of my favorite stories in the Bible is the encounter Jesus had with the Samaritan woman at the well. The words, "the water she came for didn't matter anymore" came to my mind and I pulled over and the song was written in about 20 minutes. I would say that song came easily because I knew who the True Author was. I have written a couple of more that haven't been released. I think songwriting comes easy for people who are called to be songwriters. Some people are just good at writing songs and they write them all of the time. But I think God can give anyone a song whenever He wants to. We just have to listen to Him, be obedient, and grab a pen when He speaks.
Hallels: For our readers who would like to purchase your new record or learn more about you, where can they go?
Mike: My music can be found on ITunes and CD baby. They can also be ordered from my website, mike-freeman.webs.com.
