Royce Lovett: From an Aspiring Boxing Champion to His New EP "Write It on the Wall"
New Pop/Soul artist Royce Lovett brings a needed breath of fresh air to music. Lovett is a multi-talented singer, songwriter and rapper whose unique sound and socially conscious lyrics not only spark conversation, but emotion. The once underground emcee and Tallahassee, FL native is gearing up for his first release on Motown Gospel, with a 20+ city tour to support his 5-track EP entitled;WRITE IT ON THE WALL, in stores and online everywhere Friday, October 23, 2015.
Hallels: Royce, thanks for doing this interview with us. You started with a dream of becoming a boxing champion. How and why did you change direction to becoming a singer?
My father was a boxer, guess his passion for the sport rubbed off on me. I fell in love with how the sport sharpened my intellectual skills, because it teaches you how to not be afraid of what's in front of you. I believe it's the greatest sport in the world. My dad bought the gloves, tape and trained me at the Lincoln Center in Frenchtown. But in 2003, I found Christ and I asked Him what's the plan for my life? He replied "Music." It wasn't hard to run in that direction, because I already had my hand in music.
Hallels: How would you describe your style of music?
I would say my music in "Hip Hop," because she raised me. I have found myself in the "POP/SOUL" category. I love 808s, breaks, guitars and song structure. I make whatever I feel in the moment, which people have coined as "CEREBRAL SOUL." It moves the soul and attacks the intellect.
Hallels: "Write It on the Wall" is your first EP with Motown Gospel. How did you get to work with them?
I was at the right place at the right time. I just finished my tour in Europe and was asked to play at a church in my hometown. Cameron, a former Motown employee, was at the church. He saw me, loved the sound and wanted to introduce me to the right people. The ball started rolling from there.
Hallels: Why did you entitle your record "Write It on the Wall"?
"Write It on the Wall" simply means "Let everyone know and don't apologize about it." I believe the world needs a group of people to firmly stand and say what Love is, what it isn't and how to start giving it away.
Hallels: Who are some of the guests (producers, singers, writers) you have worked with on this record?
NATE BUTLER produced the whole EP, which was great. Morgan Harper Nichols features on "Down4Whatever."
Hallels: On your website, you said "I want my music to be food and have something tangible that people can take back with them and learn." In what ways is "Write It on the Wall" food for your listeners to chew on?
LOVE. There are so many kinds of love and the EP talks about it all. Honestly, most of my songs discusses love. We can only grow in Love; life is all about... LOVE.
Hallels: What are your new singles off this EP? Can you tell us more about it?
Well, the two singles from the EP are "Write It On The Wall" and "Show Me Love." I told you a bit about "Write It On The Wall" earlier, so I'll tell you about "Show Me Love." When you show me love, I can do anything; when I show you love, you can do anything. This makes me want to dance. It's sad everyone can't say the same.
Hallels: I believe you are also touring in support of this new EP, where can our readers go to learn about your tour dates and music?
Follow me on all social media platforms @RoyceLovett or check my website, www.RoyceLovett.com.
I'm also partnering with "FeedONE" to help feed hungry families, so please go to FeedONE.com/royce to donate to the cause.
If you can't feed 100, you can feed ONE!
