Brinson Brings Lots of Realness to His New Album "Until We Meet Again"
Brinson is a Christian hip hop artist who has just released his brand new album "Until We Meet Again." He is also the founder of GodChazers Entertainment which has released over 20 Christ-centered hip hop albums. We have the honor to speak to Brinson for this exclusive interview.
Hallels: Brinson, tell us a little about your journey. How did you feel God's call to make music for Him?
My journey has been filled with Mountains and valleys. I felt God had a great calling for me to give the gospel in another form which is rap. I did secular rap for a time in my life. I was doing the alot of the right things to build a career in music. I went to college for music business, building a fan base, and other things to go higher in hip hop. It all came to a halt when I woke up and my apartment was on fire. I prayed and ask God to get me out. He did I could not resist the love of God. I stopped doing music all together. I just went into a cocoon and just jumped into the bible and prayer. A few year went by and God impressed it on my heart about GodChaserz.
Hallels: Besides recording your own albums, you are also the founder of GodChaserz Entertainment which has released over 20 Christ-centered hip hop albums. Who are some of the artists on the label? And why did you want to start this label?
We have a small but effective roster. GodChaserz consists of artist ReadyWriter @ReadyWritter & Cstraight. I started GodChaserz in 2006 after going to school for music business and rededication to the Lord. I found how much hip hop influenced me in middle and high school. It motivated me to make wrong decisions so in turn I wanted a label to motivate people of all ages to Chase God.
Hallels: When you sign an artist to your label, what do you look out for in the artist?
I really look for if the artist already has some regional traction. Getting to know the artist is big as well. With any form of ministry or business knowing who you co-labor with is important. Lastly, we have to stand on common grounds ministry wise. A relationship of agreement between artist and label is a powerful thing.
Hallels: Let's talk about your new album "Until We Meet Again." What are some lessons you wish listeners would grasp after listening to this record?
One of the biggest lessons I want translated is that God's love can bring you out of any hurt. I wrote this album going thru a lot of pain. Great pain really, but Jesus never left me. I learned how to trust the Lord in discomfort, betrayal, and suffering. Even in that I felt loved by him. He impressed on my heart pain is seasonal. I spoke a lot of real things on this album. I talked about social issues, church issues, etc. But you will not hear more problems than the goodness of God on this project. You can hear a lot of realness in my song "Trees In the forest".
Hallels: I like the creativity you invested in the songs, particularly "Schwarzenegger." What's the song about? And how has Arnold Schwarzenegger influenced you on this song?
Ha! Thank you so much. Schwarzenegger is about the return of the Lord. Arnold's tag line is "I'LL BE BACK" but I know that Jesus said he will be back first.
Well, im a big movie buff so I flipped alot of his movie titles in the song. If you know a lot of his films im name dropping them. It was fun making that song. Now the Schwarzenegger music video is making a buzz and that is a huge blessing.
Hallels: I also like "Catfish." Tell us more about this song?
MTV has a show called Catfish and its about how things and stories in relationships are not as they seem. Sort of a bait and switch type of deal. So in the song I told 3 stories. The first story is about how we hear lies in the hood about the glamorous drug dealing life but the catch is the prison time or the fate that comes with it. Second was based on the story in proverbs about the adulteress woman. The 3rd is the biggest lie of Satan, which says live how you want because God is not real.
Hallels: When you are not recording or singing, how are you involved with your local church? Do you sometimes lead worship in church?
Lead worship whoa! I wish I could sing good enough to do that. My worship is purely in the form of hip hop.
I'm involved in our men's ministry at my church also I'm involved in the prison ministry from time to time. I was heavily involved but between touring around the country I don't get to go as much. But one cool thing about traveling so much I get opportunities to assist other ministries with youth camps, youth speaking, outreach events and prison.
