The Katinas Talk to Hallels About Their Sunday Set
The Katinas is a family of five brothers hails from American Samoa, and moved to Washington state, after the death of their mother in 1988. The group's members sang in church as children, and began playing fairs, soon moving up to nationwide slots opening for R. Kelly, Jasmine Guy, DC Talk, and Amy Grant.
The group was signed to Gotee Records and have released several albums on the imprint, including a 2006 retrospective entitled Collection. Shortly after their 2006 "Collection" Release, their contract with Gotee expired. It was not renewed, and they are no longer signed to a label. Their album "Still" was independently released in August 2008. They recently performed at UCLA in 2009 from June 30 - July 2 for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and played in the Harvest Crusade of 2008, 2009, and 2013.
Following the devastation of the 2009 Samoa earthquake, the Katinas put on a benefit concert called "Hope for Samoa". It took place at the Fellowship Bible Church in Brentwood, Tennessee, just outside of Nashville, on October 7. They're still desperately trying to raise at least $60,000 for relief efforts. The closing date was November 10. They perform at Bayside of south Sacramento every once in a while, bringing in a minimum of 600 people in Sacramento City College.
They are to release their brand new worship album of covers entitled "Sunday Set." We are so honored to catch up with them for this exclusive Hallels' interview.
Hallels: Thank you for your time. Congratulations on the release of your new album "Sunday Set" which comprises of worship covers. Why did you feel the call to make a covers album of worship songs?
We wanted to honor modern day psalmist who God has used to give the church at large great anthems that we have been blessed with during corporate worship.
Hallels: What are some of the songs you have covered on this new album?
We've covered 10,000 Reasons, Our God, Beautiful Things, Oceans, etc,....
Hallels: Given that many of us are already familiar with these songs, what have you done to them to make them your own?
We wanted to give the listener an opportunity to here some of these favorites a different perspective thru our arrangements. Definitely fused with a good dose vocal sensibility.
Hallels: Speaking of worship, do you guys often lead worship in local churches?
There is an amazing church in Murfreesboro TN, about 45 minutes from where we live(Franklin TN.) called World Outreach Church. We have the honor of leading worship there about 4 times a year.
Hallels: How would you define worship then?
For us, worship is not in the raising of hands or singing a lyric. Worship is a lifestyle! It's the way that we are honoring our wives and leading our families the way that God has called us to. When you live a life that honors God and his word then you are a worshiper!
Hallels: If our readers would like to purchase your new album or find out more about you, where can they go?
You can get all of our music from iTunes or at www.thekatinas.com
