House of Cars without a doubt is right up there with Boston Legal and The West Wing as the best TV shows of the new millennium. As romantic as the idea sounds, its story did not start in a quaint little café on the Lower East Side but rather across the pond in 1989. Like all good movies and television series it started with a book. The book House of Cards was written by Michael Dobbs in 1989 and was set in England. In the book, Frank Underwood is Francis Urquhart, the Chief Whip of the conservative party who schemes his way to position of the Prime Minister and thus the leader of government. The book was adapted for television, BBC to be precise, the very next year and was broadcast from 18th November to 9th December 1990.The author of the book was a writer on the series, there were some changes made but the story stayed relatively the same . The series was ranked 84th on the British Film Institute's list of the 100 greatest British Television Programs.
Fast forward to 2008 and the rights to the book are bought by Media Rights Capital, they tout the idea around to different studios but Netflix outbids them all and picks up the series to boost their campaign to air more original programming. House of Cards has quickly become a favorite with fans and critics giving it the thumbs up. Production of season 3 was hampered by a number of factors including issues with the state of Maryland where the series is shot.
Precious little information about the upcoming season is trickling down with the only official communication being about two new cast members. However, Spacey and his team were seen in a cemetery in Havre de Grace, Maryland which is a stand in for Frank Underwood's fictional hometown of Gafney. The team was also spotted in Washington D.C and was denied the right to shoot at the U.N headquarters. Season 3 was originally expected early 2015 but due to various factors delays are expected. Netflix originally commissioned two seasons and then renewed the show for a third.
