'John Wick' Movie Review: Calm in the Outside, Boiling in the Inside
"John Wick" was released in theatres and cinemas last Oct. 24 under the distribution of Summit Entertainment in the United States and Lions Gate Entertainment in other territories globally. It has grossed $14,150,000 in the United States since its release.
"John Wick" is a 2014 American action thriller film, focusing on the life of an ex-hitman as he comes out of retirement to trace the gangsters that took everything from him.
The film cast members include Keanu Reeves as John Wick, Michael Nyqvist as Viggo Tarasov, Alfie Allen as Iosef Tarasov, Willem Dafoe as Marcus, Dean Winters as Avi, Adrianne Palicki as Ms. Perkins, Bridget Moynahan as Helen Wick, John Leguizamo as Aurelio, and Ian McShane as Winston.
Other members of the cast include Lance Reddick as Charon, Daniel Bernhardt as Kirill, Omer Barnea as Gregori, Toby Leonard Moore as Victor, Bridget Regan as Addy, Keith Jardine as Kuzma, Thomas Sadoski as Jimmy, David Patrick Kelly as Charlie, Clarke Peters as Harry, Kevin Nash as Francis, and Scott tixier as Violinist.
The Atlantic says that the movie's plot is one of the most expressively manipulative devices ever seen on film. It was when John Wick (Keanu Reeves) received a gift from his late wife Helen (Bridget Moynahan) - a puppy named Daisy. Helen ordered the puppy before she died and it will serve to help John cope for her departure. It happened when the doorbell rang and John saw the puppy. Soon, he connected to it in the long run as they eat cereal together, sleep together, and do road trips together. However, Daisy was killed by the Russian gang members led by Iosef (Alfie Allen) after John refused to sell his vintage '69 Mustang. This brought John in rage and led him to kill a number of people in the film.
The action scenes are exceptional with the thrilling volatility to the ferocious manoeuvring of John Wick, with every single scene "lit for maximum action authenticity", as per Cinema Blend. The film also raised the bar of excitement as the battle between Wick and the Tarasovs engage with thrashing thunderstorms.
Art is inherent to the film, despite of the malevolent sequences. It is manifested by the establishment of "underworld suspense", as per Roger Ebert. This involves the film's cinematography concentrated in black, white, or gray, evidenced by the crying clouds during the funeral of John's wife, the suit that he is on, and the hue of his sophisticated Mustang.
The film is directed by David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, along with Mike Witherill as executive producer.. Basil Iwanyk, David Leitch, Eva Longoria, Keanu Reeves are the film producers, with Derek Kolstad serving as writer.
